BAIC stated that it has made significant progress in the development of sodium-ion batteries, which could become an alternative to traditional Li-ion solutions.
The main goal is to lower EV prices without losing significant performance characteristics.
At the current stage, the energy density of these batteries is around 140–160 Wh/kg, which is lower than that of current Li-ion batteries (180–250 Wh/kg). However, sodium-ion technology has its advantages. It works better in low temperatures, charges faster, and is less affected by degradation.
Besides, sodium is far more affordable than lithium and more accessible in terms of the raw material base. This is especially important amid increasing prices for raw materials and rising demand for batteries.
