Ford Recalls Explorer Again Over Roof Rail Trim Detachment Risk

A long-running issue involving the roof rail trim on the Ford Explorer has resurfaced, prompting another major recall. The problem affects certain 2016–2019 model-year Explorers, where decorative roof rail trim pieces can loosen, detach while driving, and fall onto the roadway, potentially creating a hazard for other motorists.

According to Ford, the issue is caused by retaining pins that can lose their holding strength over time, allowing the trim pieces to separate from the vehicle. While the company says it is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the defect, detached components on a highway can force following drivers to take sudden evasive action.

The recall covers base-model Explorers, XLT trims, Police Interceptor Utility vehicles, and Explorer Sport models equipped with roof rail trim finished in silver, black, or Absolute Black. In total, approximately 661,162 vehicles across North America are affected, including 620,483 units in the United States, with the remainder located in Canada and Mexico.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) first began investigating the issue in early 2020 after receiving 11 reports of roof rail trim becoming detached. Ford initially argued that the problem did not warrant a formal recall, citing the relatively low likelihood of separation, the lightweight nature of the component, and the fact that owners would often notice a loose trim piece before it detached completely.

However, following discussions with regulators, the automaker agreed to conduct a recall campaign.

The repair procedure is straightforward. Dealers will install additional plastic retaining pins to secure the roof rails and, where necessary, replace damaged clips or trim pieces. All repairs will be performed free of charge for affected owners.
